Tex was a U.S. soldier who served in the Vietnam War alongside Forrest Gump and Lieutenant Dan Taylor. During an ambush, where many of his platoon mates are killed, he is wounded, but Forrest rescues him and carries him out of the jungle.

Later, while talking to himself and narrating his time spent in Vietnam, Forrest says "Tex? I had no idea where Tex was from" an ironic remark as Forrest mentions how his fellow soldiers came from different parts of America, but Tex was arguably from Texas.

Tex was formerly an assistant to Allen Dulles. He was sent to Vietnam after Dulles got angry at a busboy who dropped oatmeal on Dulles’ shoe at a diner, but informed Dulles the boy was too young to be sent to ‘Nam.
