Smitty Miller (often referred to as just Smitty) is a denizen of Bayou La Batre, Louisiana in the Gump & Co. novel.
Smitty is an oysterman who resents Forrest's entry into the oystering business. He may also have been a shrimp fisherman, expressing contempt that Forrest's Gump Shrimp Company overshadowed the competition prior to its demise. Smitty is also a racist, calling Bubba a "coon" and opposing integration.
Forrest tries to avoid contact with Smitty, who constantly sabotages and destroys his property and that of his oystering business. The breaking point comes when Smitty and his gang brutalize Sergeant Kranz and call him a "n-----" [censored]. Forrest seeks Smitty's crew out and decisively fights them off single-handedly.
