Mister Trusswell (who prefers to go by Slim) is a salesman in Mobile, Alabama. He hires Forrest to place (not sell) encyclopedias in people's homes (in doing so compelling them to sign a contract to buy a yearbook every year for the rest of their life).
Good-natured Forrest is uneasy about trying to "place" the textbooks, and even ends up giving fifty dollars to a woman who needed to pay her rent. Eventually, he enters the home of Alice Hopewell, the rich wife of Alfred Hopewell the vice president of Coca Cola, and gets his first contract signed. Mr. Hopewell, however, compels Forrest to come to Atlanta to reproduce a soft drink he accidentally concocted, and Forrest's relationship with Slim is terminated.
Later in the novel[]
Later, Forrest hires Slim to work on sales for his oystering company.
