Mister Tribble is a former international grand master in chess, and Forrest Gump's mentor.

Forrest finds Mister Tribble playing chess with himself outside the Grandmaster's Invitational Chess Tournament, and joins in as the second player mid-game. He easily defeats Mister Tribble, who is impressed and convinces him to attend the international chess championship in Los Angeles. Forrest wins the championship, but embarrasses himself with flatulence, and Mister Tribble cuts off their partnership.

Near the end of the novel, Forrest hires Mister Tribble to help Mrs. Gump with bookkeeping for Forrest's shrimping business. Mr. Tribble has quit by the time the sequel novel Gump & Co. begins.
