Lyndon B. Johnson was the 36th President of the United States. He awarded Forrest Gump the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions in the Vietnam War. Shortly after issuing the award, Forrest drops his pants and shows Johnson his wounded buttock.

In the novel

In the novel, Johnson invites Forrest to eat. He gives him a brief tour of the White House: in the Rose Garden he shows Forrest a scar of his on his belly and inquires about Forrest's wound. Forrest drops his pants and shows his wounded buttock, an event photographed by the press and plastered on numerous newspapers, to the chagrin of Colonel Gooch, Forrest's escort in Washington.

In the film

While giving him the medal in Washington, D.C., President Johnson jokes that he'd like to see Gump's gunshot wound in the buttock. Gump takes this at face value, drops his pants, and shows the wound, on live television.
