Forrest Gump is fitted with leg braces in early childhood. The doctor who fits him with the leg braces, explains to his mother that his legs are healthy and strong, but his back is "crooked as a politician", or as his mother says "crooked like a question mark" Later, they break off, while Forrest runs from some bullies, but by that point he didn't need them anymore.

The doctor who fitted Forrest with the leg braces appears later in the movie, when Forrest's mother is dying of cancer. When Forrest returns home, the doctor is in the room with her (presumably diagnosing her cancer), and starts to leave, promising to return tomorrow. Before he leaves, he looks at Forrest and remarks on how well they straightened his back up.
