Forrest Gump finds himself in Alaska when he is transferred there by his post commander in the Army. Forrest had been jailed for being AWOL, though this had been due to his arrest for contempt of Congress in the Iran–Contra affair. His post commander decided to place Forrest here to get him as far away as he possibly could.

While in Alaska, Forrest re-encounters Mister McGivver, now a drunken captain of the Exxon Valdez. McGivver becomes incapacitated by alcohol, leaving a clueless Forrest to control the ship, ending in a tremendous oil spill.

Forrest is then transferred even further away, to Berlin, Germany.
